Meliponicultura, as the production of this honey is called, began more than three thousand years ago. Honey was widely used by Mayan healers to treat eye, hearing, respiratory, digestive and postpartum problems, and it is still used today in many communities in the Yucatan. Since this native species of Melipona bees (Melipona Beechelii) absorbs more of the nutritional properties of plants than other bees, its honey contains more fructose than glucose, giving it a unique flavor and textural properties. However, it is important to note that there is no solid scientific evidence supporting the idea that melipona honey can repair eyesight.
Melipona Honey is a product of the Melipona bee, a hardy and luxuriant bee that makes its home in the hollows of trees and stone walls. More productive than any other, the Melipona bee creates a honey of unmatched complexity and richness, despite its sensitivity to climate and habitat change.
Our Source: Central Mexico
This slightly sweet treasure is harvested in the Totonac region of Veracruz, where more than 20 producer families collaborate, forming a cooperative under local legislation. Here, they engage in our edible forest model, where the cultivation of melipona is paired with that of cinnamon, allspice and vanilla.
MEXICAN SCAPTOTRIGONA: A Unique Bee
Native to the Veracruz and Puebla regions, these bees, also known as "Mayan" bees, are endemic to Mexico. They are exceptional due to the absence of stingers and venom, making their honey unique.
